Is this normal? They are not black like from an injuring or anything and its not all my toenails, just like 2 nails on each foot. The nails are turning dark, almost black and when I cut my nails it looks like the black could be pealed off the nail. Sounds weird, I know. I am just wondering if this is an indication that I am not getting enough vitamins. I am 7 weeks prego and have been on my vitamins for about 4 weeks now. and how good you've taken care of them

Hi. =) I only have a couple of suggestions, but I hope they help. Buy a pair of toenail clippers. That's right--the same kind us humans use. The 'guillotine' styled pet clippers don't work as well with guinea pigs, because they're big, awkward, and hard to maneuver around their tiny nails.
Secondly, trim your cavy's toenails twice a week (a very small amount) for 1 month. This will recede the quick (the flesh in the nail itself) and make it possible to trim the nail shorter in the future, and also help to *not* cut the quick.
Give your guinea pig something to do when you're clipping nails. Give them a small hunk of fresh lettuce (they like the core/heart of the head of lettuce best). This will hopefully keep your 'furkid' calm while you're fiddling with her feet! =)

PLEASE DO NOT use baby powder if you cut the quick, as another poster suggested. While it DOES serve the purpose, it is a lot more painful and agonizing to your guinea pig (or any animal) to use this to stop bleeding.
There are fragrances, oils, and other 'additives' in baby powder to make it softer and to bring about the 'baby fresh scent' we all know so well. This will STING your furbaby.
Buy STYPTIC powder at your local pet store; it isn't expensive and your pet's nerve endings will appreciate it. Even the UNscented baby powder I would stay away from.Guinea pig toenails?
my piggy wiggles all the time, try to cut the back nails first and when it come to the top nail - get a carrot and feed her, the feet go Ont the carrot and cut them while she/he not looking I do it to mine :)

Use a baby nail clipper, and after each clip, give your guinea pig a treat. Clip another, get a treat. That way, it shows your guinea pig that she can be rewarded for getting her toenails clipped.
It's also important that they are clipped, so make sure that if you don't do it, have it administered by a vet.

have a friend hold your guinea pig while you gently cut the nails. give your guinea pig lots of positive encouragement and tasty treats. tell her shes a good girl then give her a small healthy treat. be careful not to cut the quick, and if you do use some baby powder to stop the bleeding.
i do my 3 piggies with human clippers. you migjht of had notice when your trying to clipp their nails it might get frighten and kick and even try to bite.
so what i do is make someone else hold him and give them a slice of cucomber while i trim there nails and it works great.

i put them on and tried soaking them in acetone and i also tried a off brand nail polish remover but not working. it looks like 1 of my toe nails came off trying to get one off. what can i do to remove them? i thought gasoline as the last resort lol.Help got fake toenails wont come off?

Also, you have to file off the residue left behind with a nail file - the acetone won't take the nail off cleanly. Embarassing thick / yellow toenails?
When I was a teen, I contracted toenail fungus from sharing shower stalls in an all girls school. I've tried everything to clear it up - lamisil, alcohol, whatever remedy I found on the internet. My toenails keep falling off and i have no idea why! in the past 2 weeks, 3 have fallen off. No pain, no blood. I dont even notice they have fallen off until i feel them scraping against my other toes. I wear sandals, so shoes being too tight is not the problem. any ideas?Why do toenails fall off?

Pregnancy and toenails are turning dark, almost black??
Is this normal? They are not black like from an injuring or anything and its not all my toenails, just like 2 nails on each foot. The nails are turning dark, almost black and when I cut my nails it looks like the black could be pealed off the nail. Sounds weird, I know. I am just wondering if this is an indication that I am not getting enough vitamins. I am 7 weeks prego and have been on my vitamins for about 4 weeks now. My boyfriend is in Marine bootcamp and has remained on light duty as he has had severe ingrown nails, which have been removed by military doctors while in bootcamp. Also, after 3 trys he passed the hearing test. My questions are why would the military doctors do this to him. Help got fake toenails wont come off?
i put them on and tried soaking them in acetone and i also tried a off brand nail polish remover but not working. it looks like 1 of my toe nails came off trying to get one off. what can i do to remove them? i thought gasoline as the last resort lol.Help got fake toenails wont come off?
The acetone should work - I've done my nails several times. However, if you don't soak the nails for a sufficient amount of time, then no, they won't come off. Also, you have to file off the residue left behind with a nail file - the acetone won't take the nail off cleanly. Embarassing thick / yellow toenails?
When I was a teen, I contracted toenail fungus from sharing shower stalls in an all girls school. I've tried everything to clear it up - lamisil, alcohol, whatever remedy I found on the internet. I want to be able to wear sandals %26amp; have a pedicure done, but I'm too embarassed. Is there anyone else with this problem? How have you handled it? usually a fungal infection, they take a sample of your nail and analyze it. for a fungal infection you have to take lamisil or a pill medication for a length of time I believe it's a year to get fully rid of it as the fungus is in your system, it's under the nail. The brush on remedies do not work, they don't penetrate the hard nail to kill it. things like tea tree oil and menthols will help symptoms but not totally kill the fungus either. Lots of people try home remedies but they only get rid of symptoms. Toe nails on my left foot are all thick as in multiple type layers, no matter what I've done e.g wear loose shoes, use cuticle oils, wear closed in shoes I can't get the nails back to normal. I choose watermelon.
Preferably , I choose the watermelon with seeds as opposed to the seedless kind.

Seedless watermelon is never as sweet as the one with the seeds.
Seems somewhere in the process of our farming industry making watermelon seedless, they seemed to have taken all that good sugar out of it also.

Paint your toenails with 2 or 3 coats, letting each dry before applying the next one. Do it just before bed so it can really ';set'; overnight. The next morning when you shower, just before you get out, use your fingernail to gently scrape off what's left on your skin-it should come right off (the water softens your skin and the hold the polish has on your skin). WA-LA! Easy, pretty nails, and you don't have to be overly careful.

Since it is not in the wild, ferrets don't have anything (like digging or scratching at trees and such) to naturally wear down the nail. Long nails can get caught in carpet, towels, etc. and if they try to free themselves then they can rip the nail causing it to bleed profusely and hurt. A ripped nail usually means a trip to the vet because a ferret doesn't have a lot of blood to lose.

Should I paint my toenails?
Even though the weather is getting cold, I still wear sandals all through the winter. I've always done that, don't ask me why, but the cold doesn't bother me on my feet. So my feet will still be able to be seen by people while I'm out. But I really wasn't sure if people actually looked at girls feet enough even when they're showing to bother painting my toes. I've been thinking of painting my toes for a while(probably over a year!) but just keep putting it off because I get the feeling that people wouldn't really look at them enough to even notice, or make it worth it maybe is the right word.

White marks are generally caused by using polishes that contain Formaldehyde or Tolulene. These chemicals dry out the nail bed. Your best defense is to get a pedicure and have the nail tech lightly buff your nails. Don't use any nail polish until the dryness goes away. Use a cuticle oil daily. This will help rehydrate the nail bed. When you are ready to polish again use Poshe Antimicrobial Base Coat. This has an anti-fungal built in to the polish that will help eliminate further white spots. Stay away from any polishes that contain these chemicals.
