What is the function of toenails?

It is thought that fingernails and toenails are remnants of claws from our animal ancestors. There really is no purpose any more. I agree that they now simply serve as a protector of sensitive areas. What is the function of toenails?
Toenails protect the delicate ends of our toes from physical damage. What is the function of toenails?
kavi t says that since they're dead cells they have no function. I guess a car or a building or a calculator or a lightbulb also have no function then.

Used to be claws. Think of fingernails: They can be used to scrape, squeeze, slice, separate, gouge, and in a pinch even serve to turn a loose screw. They're good for picking fleas, picking up dimes, etc. But we don't use our feet for much these days except walking and dancing, and we wear shoes.
hi dear nails and hair are dead cells so it has no fuctions.
I've wondered that too, and I have to go with tmac on this one. If they were really intended to protect, why protect the top of fingers and toes? That area is not prone to injury over any other part. I agree that the nails are a left over remnant from another time, like the appendix.
