I have a really hard time cutting my guinea pigs toenails - any advice?

Lucky for me he only has two feet with nails

Here's my piggly poo:

Your cavy is SO cute :) I reccomend putting some bricks down in front of its water bottle, so it will walk on them and keep its nails worn down.I have a really hard time cutting my guinea pigs toenails - any advice?
Sometimes it is easier to do with the pig upright rather than turned over. We just sit them on a towel on a hard surface (in our case, the top of the wide back of an overstuffed chair). Ours are used to it and it is a one person job but you might want to have one person control the head while the other gently pulls the foot slightly away from the body and clips the nail avoiding the quick. They tend to be much less freaked out when they have all four feet on the ground.

You might want to have a little container of corn starch handy in case you miss and go too deep.
Aw-he is adorable!

Do you have the special cutters made for small animals? It's much safer for the piggie, makes it much easier and the nail won't split like w/dog nail trimmers.Just be careful not to cut too closely!

Wrap him snuggly in a towel so he can't squirm out. While you are cutting his nails, have someone gently cover his eyes w/their finger. It helps if he can't see what's going on and he will become more relaxed-believe me,it works!
aww, he is adorable... well.. the tactic i use to cut my guinea pig's nails is to flip him on his back and hold him tightly until he relaxes... that is what i was taught to do at least... and to know how short to cut the nails... if he has dark nails like mine does.. i just cut the tips off.. but if he has light colored nails, you should be able to see the quick (pink or red thing) in his nail.. just don't cut too close to that..if you do cut to far he will start to bleed.. but it's not too hard to stop... good luck.. oh.. sometimes i give him carrots to distract him... =)
haha hes adorable..no toward the vet cost..i kno animals nails can be tricky but if your firm stern and persistant they usually get the idea and hold still...usually i corner them...grap a paw and kinda hold them in place with my arm...

you can ask for help if they are big squirmers...have someone hold him dwn as you hold the paw and clip...
you don't have to trim they never grow, like their teeth if you have to you use a file avoid the quick(veins)
cute piggie! I would just have the vet trim them, just to be safe :)
